My Old Friend

Tonight we were over at a friend's house for one of our regular visits, and, reckless with giddiness over the baby news, I decided to go crazy and give coffee another try. Now, I am a former coffee junkie, but thanks to pregnancy and the accompanying nausea, I have not indulged in something like four months. It smelled good to me tonight, though, and I dared to give it a second chance.
It hit my taste buds like sweet, sweet nectar of the gods. And in about twenty minutes, it hit my nervous system like a couple of rum and Cokes. I felt my face growing flushed, my body temperature rising, my voice getting louder and faster. I poured a second cup, remembered I was pregnant, and opted for hot cocoa instead. But the damage was done. I have learned that drinking coffee is not like riding a bike, in that one's tolerance for the caffeine drops markedly after having taken a months-long sabbatical.
We got home, and for two straight hours I cleaned the kitchen like a woman possessed. Jim was watching a new movie he had rented and tried to get me to sit down with him, but sitting was not in the cards. What was in the cards was dishes, then the frantic removal of every item from the counter tops, wiping with water and Clorox, dusting and returning of the counter items, cleaning the top of the fridge, cleaning the stove top with actual stove top scrubbing cleaner, dusting and the tidying the baker's rack, and sweeping and mopping the floor.
I am now coming down a little, and my heart is slowly pitter-pattering back to a normal rate. I had to change my clothes for the sweat. I feel shaky and drained, but soothed by my sparkling kitchen (and by the large and well-frosted piece of cake I am currently eating.)
But I will not be drinking coffee again for awhile. This can't be good for me. Or for the boy. Ah, the boy... :)

I dreamed last night that I drank coffee (I've been fantasizing about coffee since shortly before I found out I was pregnant, which is when it started making me feel sick to drink it) and that it tasted gross and made me feel gross. I was SO disappointed. I'm hoping it will be delicious and wonderful after the baby is born--and I will take a lesson from you and start SLOW! "Sitting was not in the cards"--ha ha ha!

Hahahaha.....that's funny. It reminds me of Monday. I went to Applebee's with a coworker and really wanted a margarita, but had to settle for one of the fruity slushy non-alcoholic drinks. I got the Cherry Lime-Aid and it was delicious. Halfway through I decided to look at the menu again to see what was in it and if I could recreate it at home - and to my suprise it had an ENERGY DRINK in it. Now granted it was only a shot, but I started freaking out thinking about all of the horrible things it could do to the baby. Immediately I started thinking my heart was beating too hard and that I was sweating. My coworker just rolled her eyes and reminded me that she drank coffee throughout her pregnancy, so one little drink isn't going to killme or the baby.

I'm so excited for you and your little boy!!!

CONGRATS on the baby boy. I was excited to see your post below and I'll bet I know EXACTLY which doctor you saw too by your description of DR. K.

I was so excited after reading studies that small amounts of caffeine are okay during pregnancy. I think my mom drank Pepsi through out most of her pregnancy with us, because it was the only liquid she wasn't throwing up (including water). The doctor was all, drink up!

Sorry about the spazzing, but at least you have a sparkling kitchen now.

Yikes! I can see that caffine can do that to you after staying away for a while. I, too, avoided caffine during my pregnancy, so understand. BTW, reading that made my head spin. I think I was reading it at the pace you were cleaning! :)

Lisa- Ha. I bet you do know which doc it is; I've heard some bad things about him from other people in town, too. I forgot to tell you all the other thing he did that seriously pissed me off. (Swistle, I think you esp. will enjoy this tidbit.)
So when I was waiting in the exam room for the doctor to deliver the baby, it was noonish, and I hadn't eaten since eight, and hello! Pregnant=starving to death. So I'm rumaging around in my purse for anything edible to keep me from fainting off the exam table, and I found a crushed granola bar and two pieces of chocolate (Special Dark, though...) And of course, as soon as I pop the last chocolate in my mouth, the doctor comes in. I laugh sheepishly, swallow, and say, "Sorry, a little chocolate there. I was starving!"
And the dear doctor raises his eyebrow and says, "Chocolate, huh? Is that on your pregnancy diet?"
AAAAAHHHHGGGG!

OH MY GOD WHAT AN ASSHOLE. Let's all write him mean letters!

What a mean doctor! Doesn't he know about horomone induced rage? You could have totally gone off on him for that comment.

I used to get shaky hands from drinking a can of coke, and I liked it. Enjoy your clean kitchen :-)
